Crawl-AlexPopovTraining.mpgshows Popov's signature training routine. It was this slow training that so impressed Bill Boomer, Emmett Hines and eventually, Terry Laughlin. Laughlin's Total Immersion training technique is an exaggerated version of what Popov does here. Where Popov shows a great deal of body roll, TI teaches a full 90 degree roll to "skate" on each side. Where Popov reaches well forward on both sides before descending to the catch, TI uses catch-up stroke drills. TI does not teach the big Popov kick, however, preferring to let students find their own kicking rhythm. |

IMBack-TomDolanGoldWR400mSydney2000.mpgTom Dolan USA shows a sporadic kick, but enjoys a comfortable lead in winning the Gold and setting a World Record. Again, Dolan has a very light kick, especially for Backstroke! |
